The Bombay High Court has brought a significant legal dispute to a close, clearing the title for the web series Matka King, starring Vijay Varma. The ruling ensures that the series can continue streaming on Prime Video without any further legal interruptions.
The case originated from a suit filed by Tanuja Bhagat, who objected to the use of the title Matka King. She alleged that the series infringed upon her rights, claiming it was based on the life of her late grandfather, Kalyanji Bhagat, the original "Matka King," and argued the production proceeded without her authorization.
After reviewing arguments from both sides on April 15, 2026, Justice Sharmila Deshmukh declined to grant interim relief to the plaintiff. Subsequently, during a hearing on April 20, the plaintiff’s counsel moved to withdraw the suit. The court officially disposed of the matter as withdrawn, effectively validating the show's title.
Directed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule and produced by Roy Kapur Productions, Matka King premiered on April 17, 2026. The eight-episode period drama set in 1960s Bombay explores the rise of Brij Bhatti (Vijay Varma), a cotton trader who transforms the underground gambling game into a massive phenomenon. With the legal hurdle now cleared, the series continues its successful run on Prime Video, much to the relief of its makers and the audience.
